“Oh the Places We’ll Go” in 2017

January 3, 2017 by Sherry Boswell

Where are you traveling in 2017? See what I did there? I ASSUMED you would would travel this year. With a sophomore and a 6th grader, I have a keen sense that the family travel days may be numbered, so I want to make the most of the time we have together. So let’s talk the places we’ll go in 2017 and share a few pointers with one another, shall we?

Our Travel List for 2017

Walt Disney World

Yep, I’m a Disney girl, so I’m thrilled springtime will bring another Walt Disney World adventure for the whole family. (Especially since I’ve gone without the family on my last two Disney trips!)

Alaska

Speaking of Disney, we love Disney Cruise Line. And we’re wanting to mix it up a bit. My son is fascinated with Alaska ever since he did his report on the state in 4th grade. So my snow loving, husky obsessed son will think he won the lottery when we cruise Alaska this summer. I can’t wait to bobsled!

National Parks

I’m really excited about seeing some National Parks in 2017. Yellowstone, Zion, Arches, Bryce and the Grand Canyon are high on my list. How ever will we choose? Maybe we should do them ALL! Fortunately, there are several TravelingMom colleagues who are National Park gurus, so I plan on reading many of their posts.

Plus, several dates in 2017 are FREE! My friend Catherine shares those dates HERE.

With Zion facing record crowds, some changes may be put in place by 2018 as far as limiting numbers of people entering the park.

Some of Our Favorite Family Vacation Spots

Boston

We spent a week in Boston in August 2015, and it turned out to be an outstanding trip. This post shares our favorite activities, restaurants and accommodations.

Caribbean

Per capita, we’ve had more trips to the Caribbean than any other location. From Jamaica where we got engaged to St. Thomas where we said “I do”, the Caribbean has been so good to my family.

Our dream vacation that has spoiled us for life was a catamaran charter with iYachtClub. iYachtClub spoiled us in making the planning and preparation such a seamless process from start to finish. And the actual sail? Heaven on earth! We had a catamaran to ourselves. Denise, our captain AND chef, made us feel like family from Day 1. The experience was so amazing, I wanted to chain myself to the catamaran.

Washington, DC

For educational possibilities and free museums, no other location can beat Washington, DC. The District of Columbia is a place all kids should experience, preferably when they are old enough to absorb the information housed in one of the many Smithsonian museums.

One of our favorite experiences in DC was a bus tour of the city at night.

Highlights: touring the White House; the U.S. Capitol, which can either be booked online or through the office of your Representatives or Senators; and Mount Vernon.

The Hangup

So I’ll admit it: my biggest problem when planning travel is the fear that I won’t plan it right or choose the best cities or itinerary. So I let fear immobilize me and do nothing.

It’s “The Waiting Place” that Dr. Seuss describes in Oh, The Places You’ll Go. Where nothing happens but waiting. And then you turn the page and see:

NO!

That’s not for you!

Somehow you’ll escape

all that waiting and staying

You’ll find the bright places

where Boom Bands are playing.”

That to me is what travel is all about. So I’m going to take inspiration from Dr. Seuss and go for it. His closing words in the book?

Okay…and Hooray!

So where are you going in 2017? Please share away in the comments.

We are headed to Disney too and then taking it easier this year traveling mostly in the US. PS. That’s my favourite book!

I’ll bet I get to see you on that Disney trip! 😉 Love that book, too. I received mine as a graduation gift. Still have my ragtag copy, but I treasure it.

I wish I was going to be on that Disney trip. 🙁 I already have a trip scheduled for that time. Oh well, I do have lots of travel planned which includes as many national park trips as I can fit in. My family has been to Arches, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. Loved all of them, but Yellowstone was probably my favorite. Or was it the Grand Canyon? It’s so hard to pick one. They were all great and you really can’t go wrong when you choose to visit the national parks. Happy travels!

Drat! I was hoping I’d get to see you. Prom may interfere with me bringing the family to retreat. We will see which weekend they choose. Yellowstone is really catching my eye-I’m working hard to pitch some resorts near there in hopes I might get to go! Would love any suggestions on where you stayed, itinerary, etc. You have any links to posts?
