May 26, 2017 by Sherry Boswell

Planning a Harry Potter party doesn’t require magic. It’s as simple as reading this blog post! This roundup of party ideas will be like the “Lumos” spell, shining a light on crafts, food and decorations that will enthrall the biggest Potterheads. From floating candles to Butterbeer to DIY wands, grab your broomstick and get ready to throw a Harry Potter party that even J.K. Rowling would be proud of.

One need not pass over the threshold of Platform 9 3/4 at Kings Cross Station to make a stellar Harry Potter party come true. All it takes is a little research to find the ample examples of great party ideas.

Saying “Wingardium leviosa” we levitated our favorites for my son and his fellow wizards, and they were a smashing hit. Let this post be your sorting hat: perhaps it will give you all of the party planning tips that you’ll need for an extraordinary Harry Potter party.

Harry Potter Decorations

Floating Candles

My son used Youtube as a treasure trove of ideas. The best ones were on the Pins and Things channel, a vlogger who has specialized in all things Harry Potter.

His favorite decoration hands down was the floating candles craft. Made from paper towel rolls, paint, hot glue and LED votive lights, these candles look like the real deal thanks to the hot glue that looks like real wax.

Wizard’s Note: making these candles require some patience and time. But the finished products are amazing! We liked these so much that we’ve left them up hanging in our playroom year-round and they provide an excellent way to mood light the room.

Another fabulous decoration is the Hogwarts Express Platform 9 3/4 where guests can magically walk through the brick wall a.k.a. your door to enter the party. This makes for a wonderful entrance to the party space.

Buy the Faux brick wall decoration.

Harry Potter Food

Kids and adults alike will make these goodies disappear-no vanishing spell required! The interweb is chock full of recipes and menus fit to be Potter-ized.

Golden Snitches

First up: an easy peasy lemon squeezy way to make golden snitches is to take the Ferrero Rocher gold chocolates and attach wings to them. So simple and yet so effective. Place them in a cauldron or use as decorations on cupcakes.

Butterbeer

No Harry Potter party is complete without a wonderful Butterbeer recipe. We’ve scoured the web and tried several recipes. My son likes any that include ice cream. Most require cream soda, whipping cream, and butterscotch syrup or chips. Be forewarned: it’s a very sweet drink!

I’m always looking for reasonable options for party favors. What could be better than FREE printables? Believe me, these look more appealing when considering that Universal Orlando sells Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans for $10.95 a piece and a 4-pack of Chocolate Frogs is $ 49.95. Yeah-DIY for the win!

Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans

Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans are an excellent party favor. To make these boxes will require some folding skills, cardstock paper, a color printer, scissors and/or an X-Acto knife.

Order Jelly Belly jelly beans or you can get the BeanBoozled jelly beans that are a mixture of yummy and disgusting flavors similar to Bertie Bott’s and therefore more expensive.

Chocolate Frogs

Remember the train scene in the first Harry Potter movie? The chocolate frog jumped from the box onto the window! I’m not promising these frogs will do that, but they will be a huge hit at a Harry Potter party.

Making chocolate frogs is a cinch with a chocolate candy mold that can be ordered from Amazon. I found the chocolate candy melts at my local Michael’s craft store.

The frogs would be nothing without the box and accompanying card. Instructables.com has a Chocolate Frogs box printable that will make the perfect box after some patient folding.

Like Ron says, “it’s the cards you want” so the chocolate frog box must have one of the wizard cards inside. There are multiple templates of these wizard cards, from Albus Dumbledore to Helga Hufflepuff to Rowena Ravenclaw. We laminated ours after printing them so the chocolate wouldn’t get on the paper.

Custom Wands

This craft doubles as a party activity. Making your own wizard magic wands is a cool activity. The guests can take pride in the personalization that they can put on the wands. Bonus: it’s inexpensive!

Wizards will gladly “Expelliarmus” their previous wands for one of these. To make these, you’ll need chopsticks, hot glue gun, paint, and some decorative knickknacks like spiders, skeletons, snakes, etc. Anything that can easily be glued to the chopstick itself to add extra interest. Pins and Things has made a excellent tutorial on how to make your own wands.

Wizard’s Tip: If you’re planning a Harry Potter party, the best time of year to stock up on supplies is definitely before Halloween. Between the skulls, skeletons, spiderwebs, and cauldrons, these all make wonderful accessories to a Harry Potter party.
